The 9/11 Honor and Serve Foundation is a nonprofit, all-volunteer organization created to forever memorialize the victims of the Benghazi, Libya terrorist attack on September 11th, 2012, as well as the 9/11 victims of the attack on the World Trade Center, Pentagon and United Airlines Flight #93 in 2001.  Every year on 9/11, we hold a free, public 9/11 Memorial Ceremony in Bigfork, Montana to honor the American victims, heroes and those forever changed by these tragic events.

As part of our annual 9/11 Memorial Ceremony, the 9/11 Honor and Serve Foundation selects a nonprofit group or charity to receive donations, support and public awareness. This helps them provide much needed services to our community.  Absolutely 100% of the money we raise is used to honor the fallen, the heroes and to serve those in need in our communities.

To our friends and neighbors,

As September 11, 2025, approaches, Laura and I wanted to share an update on the 9-11 Honor and Serve Foundation.

First, and with heavy hearts, we need to let you know that we will not be hosting a full 9-11 ceremony this year. Despite our best efforts, too many logistical obstacles arose to make it possible to hold a ceremony in the meaningful and dignified way that you, the day itself, and those we honor deserve. This was not an easy decision, but we remain committed to ensuring that when we gather, it is with the depth of respect and remembrance the day calls for.

You may recall that last year we relocated the Benghazi Memorial Monument from its place of origin to Foundation co-founder Doug Averill’s farm for the 2024 ceremony. At the time, the plan was to make that its permanent home. Plans change, however—and in this case, we believe for the better. Our hope now is to return the monument to its original and breathtaking home at the Elk Preserve, on the grounds of Doug’s Flathead Lake Lodge.

As you can imagine, moving the monument is no small task. It requires careful planning, heavy equipment, a flatbed trailer, a reliable truck, and, perhaps most importantly, the patience and support of our community as it slowly makes its way seven miles down Highway 35. Hoisting it onto the trailer and back into place at the Elk Preserve also calls for creative thinking, skilled hands, and a lot of teamwork.

But as we like to say—if we moved it once, we can move it again! We are already working with Scott, who originally created the monument and assisted with the move last year, to ensure it is safely returned to its home at the Elk Preserve before September 11th.

We know some of you had questions last year about why we relocated the monument. At the time, we believed that site would provide a beautiful and meaningful setting for years to come. In hindsight, we are grateful for the opportunity to bring it back home to one of the most pristine and powerful locations imaginable.

This year, we will hold a small and intimate 9-11 remembrance gathering at 2:00 p.m., and anyone who wishes to join us is warmly welcome. Directions to the Elk Preserve: travel south on Hwy 35, turn left on Quarter Circle Road, stay left at the fork, and you will reach the gated entrance. We will be there to monitor and provide access for parking and to the monument.

Thank you, as always, for your support, encouragement, and commitment to honoring those we lost and the heroes who emerged. Together, we will continue to ensure their memory is kept alive with the dignity they so deeply deserve.

With gratitude,
Bill Thomas & Doug Averill

HONOR

We pay tribute to the great sacrifices of our fallen heroes, victims, survivors and the actions of brave citizens every year at the 9/11 Memorial Ceremony held in Bigfork, Montana. It is our duty to ensure that they are never forgotten.

SERVE

Our volunteers and our partner organizations are motivated to serve to recognize the bravery of those who lost their lives those fateful days. It is incredibly rewarding to show honor and respect through service for all that these patriots have given. Donations of time and money keep their memories alive and help meaningful charities maximize their potential.

COMMUNITY

All of the proceeds that we raise are used to support local, nonprofit, charitable organizations, events and healing programs that make a profound impact in our communities.

SUPPORT THE FOUNDATION

Thank you for putting on the Field Of Honor event at the Wrangler Springs Ranch on 9-11. My family and I attended and in so many aspects, it was humbling, encouraging and simply fantastic. I am very grateful for your leadership and for organizing such an event.

The memorial in Bigfork, MT is heart-warming and a great reminder of those terrible days in our history. To participate in this ceremony is one I will never forget and allows everyone to stand together and pay tribute to our lost friends. Thank you to all involved who work daily to honor those who have served.

I have been extremely humbled and honored to have been part of the Benghazi Memorial since it’s inception to sound Taps every year. The ceremony has grown and changed over the years, but has kept the focus on why they have the ceremony and how important it is to not forget what happened in Benghazi. Because of COVID, there couldn’t be a public ceremony in 2020. The powers at be, made sure there was a private, quaint ceremony and Taps, making SURE they weren’t forgotten.

I am so grateful to have found the Honor and Serve Foundation. I find peace, comfort and fellowship with like-minded patriots. The monument is a tribute to all of those who gave everything for our country. GOD BLESS THEM, GOD BLESS AMERICA

It has been a great honor to be involved and present at the 911 Honor and Serve Foundation annual Montana events. As a former Navy SEAL and having worked for the Intelligence Community, this foundation truly supports my brother and sisters in arms, a family of patriots who have put it all on the line for this country.
